Is your toilet not flushing when you push the button? If your flushing button, handle, or lever won’t work, you may not be sure what you can do about the issue. Here are a few steps to diagnose and troubleshoot the problem before calling a professional plumber in Sydney, like Wilco Plumbing.
If there is no water flowing and the button itself doesn’t do anything and makes no noise or has no response to being pressed, there is likely a problem with the flush mechanism itself. A component like the flush valve or fill valve may be damaged.
Remove the toilet tank cover and look into the top of the tank. There should be water in the cistern – if there isn’t, something is wrong with the mechanism filling up your toilet. Look for signs of any damaged components. Are there any pieces floating around? Can you see any means of operating when you press the flush button? This can help you troubleshoot the problem.
It’s possible that you nudged or bumped the valve controlling the water flow to your toilet. This is usually located on a silver plumbing line that leads into your wall or floor. Turn it to the left – this will lock your valve in the “open” position and ensure water can get into your toilet tank. Give your toilet a few minutes to refill, then try flushing the toilet again using the toilet button.
If your toilet is clogged due to toilet paper and waste, continuing to flush could cause it to overflow. If your toilet button doesn’t wash – or it does flush, but the water level in the toilet bowl doesn’t sink – don’t just keep flushing!
You could end up with water (and waste) on your floor, which is never good. You may even want to turn off the water supply going into the wall if you think your toilet may overflow.
If water flows and your toilet flushes, but the water level doesn’t go down or rise, it’s probably clogged.
There are a few steps you can take to try to resolve the flushing problem and unclog your toilet if it’s clogged.
If these don’t work and your toilet is still not flushing correctly, you should contact a plumber for further help. A clogged toilet isn’t just inconvenient – it can be a health hazard if it’s full of waste that can’t be flushed.
