Clogged drain pipes can be inconvenient and gross, and they can almost always be avoided with the right precautions. In this blog from Wilco Plumbing, we’ll help you learn about the top 5 ways you can take better care of your drainage system and avoid clogs and damage to your drain pipes.

Our Top 5 Tips To Prevent Blocked Drains At Home | Wilco Plumbing

1. Only Flush Waste And Toilet Paper Down The Toilet

Never flush anything except waste and toilet paper down the toilet. This is the best way to make sure your toilets never get clogged.

Toilet clogs are often caused by flushing paper towels, “flushable” wipes (which are not actually flushable), feminine hygiene products, and other such products down the drain. These items won’t break down properly, and can cause a major clog.

2. Never Put Grease Down The Kitchen Sink

Grease from cooking should never be put down the sink. If you have a lot of grease in a pan after cooking, dump it into a bowl, glass, or airtight storage container until it cools. Then, dump it into the trash, rather than pouring it down the sink.

This is essential for avoiding clogs in your kitchen sink. This is because grease tends to cool and solidify as it flows down your drain and through your pipes. Then, it can bind with other things like food scraps and hair to cause serious clogs in your sewer line and plumbing system.

3. Avoid Putting Certain Foods Down Kitchen Sinks & Garbage Disposals

You should never put coffee grounds down the kitchen sink. Coffee grounds have a tendency to expand and cause blockages in pipes.

In addition, don’t put fibrous foods like pineapple or watermelon down the garbage disposal. Eggshells should also never be put down the disposal. These foods can cause major clogs and damage your disposal.

In general, you should use your garbage disposal only for very small food scraps. The best way to prevent blockages is to scrape your dishes into the garbage to remove the bulk of food before you clean them in the sink.

4. Invest In A Hair Trap/Catcher For Shower Drains

Hair is a major cause of clogged shower drains, so we recommend purchasing a hair trap or hair catcher for your drain. These products sit over the drain, and have small holes that allow water to drain while catching the bulk of hair. Then, you can simply remove them and clean out the hair that otherwise would have entered your drain pipes. This helps prevent clogs.

5. Conduct Preventive Maintenance On Your Drains

It’s helpful to clean out your drains every month or so with drain cleaner. It’s not a bad idea to run to your hardware store to pick some drain cleaner up, and use it monthly to prevent the buildup of blockages.

However, if you don’t have chemical drain cleaners on hand, you can simply use vinegar and baking soda to prevent clogged drains.

First, just get a handful of baking soda and dump it down the drain of your sink or shower. Then, pour a cup of vinegar into the drain, and run hot water or boiling water down the drain, over the vinegar and baking soda. The chemical reaction between vinegar and baking soda will help prevent blocked drains by removing built-up hair, food, grease, and other things that may create a blockage in the future.
